Biography

H.E. Tahamoana (‘Taha’) Macpherson

New Zealand Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand, Kingdom of Cambodia and Ambassador-designate to Laos PDR

Taha Macpherson was granted Royal Permission to assume duty as New Zealand’s Ambassador to Thailand in August, 2018.  Residing in Bangkok, he is concurrently New Zealand's Ambassador to Cambodia and Ambassador-designate to Lao PDR.

A career diplomat, Taha joined New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 1996.  He has worked on a wide range of policy issues including international security and disarmament, trade and economics, and Maori economic development.

From 2014-2017, Taha was seconded as Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister, in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.  From 2006-2009, he served as the Private Secretary to the Minister of Trade.  

Taha was New Zealand Ambassador to Turkey from 2011–2014 (accredited to Israel, Jordan, Azerbaijan and Georgia. During this period, he was also responsible for New Zealand’s official relationship with the Palestinian Authority).  Taha’s earlier postings were in Washington DC and London, where he also enjoyed secondments to the United States Congress and Foreign and Commonwealth Office, respectively.

From mid-2017 until assuming his current role, Taha served as Chief of Staff to the Mayor of Auckland - New Zealand’s largest city, and commercial centre.

Taha was educated at Auckland Grammar School, and then the University of Auckland where he graduated with a Bachelor of Law and Master of Art (First Class Honours) Degrees in Political Science.

Taha is joined in Bangkok by his wife, Christina (‘Chrissy’) Macpherson.  They love travelling, sports, time with friends and family and their dogs.
