Our Relationship with Türkiye

The longstanding political and people-to people links between New Zealand and Türkiye are founded in our shared experience in the Gallipoli campaign during the First World War. Our two countries suffered horrific losses on the Gallipoli peninsula, but the campaign was also a turning point in the modern histories of both Türkiye and New Zealand. The generous spirit of reconciliation Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk showed towards his former foes facilitated the development of the warm relationship that exists between New Zealand and Türkiye.

Türkiye opened its Embassy in Wellington in 1992. The New Zealand Embassy in Ankara was established in 1993 (a trade office had been in place prior to the opening of the Embassy). New Zealand Trade and Enterprise also operate an office in Istanbul.

Economy and Trade

New Zealand and Türkiye have traditionally traded in areas such as machinery, fruit and nuts, apparel, dairy, medical equipment, tourism and travel. Türkiye is however, at the heart of a region with more than one billion people accounting for more than a quarter of the world’s economic output.  A number of New Zealand companies also use Türkiye as a manufacturing and/or logistics hub, given its highly skilled workforce and proximity to high-value, third markets.

The latest information about New Zealand's trade profile with the Türkiye is available on the New Zealand Trade Dashboard. (external link)

People and Culture

New Zealand and Türkiye have a Working Holiday Scheme which is very well subscribed.
