April 2025:

  • Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay launches a public consultation process calling for submissions on New Zealand and India’s negotiation of a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement. Read the press release(external link).
  • Negotiators commence virtual discussions.

March 2025:

  • On 17 March 2025, Minister Todd McClay and India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, announce the launch of negotiations of a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between New Zealand and India. Read the press release(external link).

Previous negotiating history

New Zealand and India previously entered into Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations in April 2010. This bilateral negotiation ended in 2015 after 10 rounds, when India joined the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiation. India later withdrew from that negotiation in 2019.
