Our relationship with Portugal

New Zealand has a friendly bilateral relationship with Portugal, which has been enhanced in recent years through shared peacekeeping work in Timor-Leste.  We share a commitment to support Timor-Leste's reconstruction and development.

The Portuguese were among the first immigrants to New Zealand in the 19th and 20th centuries. Around 1,000 Portuguese travellers visit New Zealand each year.
