Human Rights Council 52nd Session of the Universal Periodic Review – Singapore

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Delivered by Rachel Opie, Senior Adviser.

Mr President,

We warmly welcome the delegation from Singapore.

We acknowledge progress made by Singapore in strengthening its human rights protections, including ending the offence criminalising same-sex acts between men.

New Zealand recommends that Singapore:

  1. Institute a moratorium on executions and move toward the abolition of the death penalty.
  2. Ensure that sexual orientation and gender identity are included as protected characteristics in the Workplace Fairness Act.
  3. Ensure that laws and policies governing freedom of expression, freedom of association and peaceful assembly are aligned with international human rights law.

We thank the delegation for their participation today and wish them a successful review.

Thank you Mr President.
