Wallis and Futuna is an overseas collectivity of France, with its own Territorial Assembly that holds legislative authority over a limited range of local matters. The territory is largely dependent on financial transfers from France, which fund public services such as health and education, as well as key infrastructure, environmental management, and economic development projects.
Wallis and Futuna comprises three main islands—Uvea (Wallis Island), Sigave (Futuna Island), and Alo (Alofi Island)—along with 20 smaller islets, covering a total land area of 274 square kilometres. The population is approximately 12,197, with many young people (particularly those aged 18–30) residing in New Caledonia in search of employment opportunities.
While official contact between New Zealand and Wallis and Futuna is limited, strong shipping links support New Zealand’s export presence in the territory’s small market.
