Public Submissions on MFAT's next Strategic Foreign Policy Assessment

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is undertaking its triennial Strategic Foreign Policy Assessment. The Assessment will examine New Zealand’s international environment out to 2036 and consider what this means for us. We welcome public submissions to inform this Assessment.

We welcome input from New Zealanders with an interest in this topic. Your insights will help ensure we capture a range of perspectives as we finalise this Assessment. Please click the link below to enter your submission.

Purpose of the Assessment

MFAT’s Strategic Foreign Policy Assessment is intended as a contribution to the national conversation on foreign policy.

While the Assessment will consider a number of key issues, challenges and opportunities New Zealand may face over the coming decade, its purpose is not to propose specific responses. Instead, it provides an overview that will help New Zealand to prepare for potential risks and seize emerging opportunities.

To help us process and understand submissions, we may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as Microsoft Copilot to support our manual review (for example, to summarise key points). Before any AI analysis, any personally identifying information will be removed.

Submissions may also be the subject of requests under the Official Information Act 1982, which could result in their release. We apply the provisions of the Official Information Act when assessing whether to withhold or release such information under the Act.
