Joint Statement: Establishment of Joint Trade and Economic Consultations between Chile and New Zealand

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Chile and New Zealand have agreed to establish Joint Trade and Economic Consultations.

Following the commemoration of 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing trade, investment and economic cooperation through these Consultations, with a shared focus on economic growth, investment, and open, competitive markets.

Chile and New Zealand share a long-standing tradition of cooperation in shaping innovative trade frameworks – from the origins of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in the P4 Agreement; to pioneering the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA) to support modern, business-friendly rules that enable innovative digital trade; to engaging in the Future of Investment and Trade (FIT) Partnership. We also remain focused on practical cooperation to improve investment conditions and strengthen supply chain resilience.

As active members of APEC and the World Trade Organization, Chile and New Zealand also share a commitment to strengthening the multilateral trading system and promoting open, rules-based trade.

The bilateral Joint Trade and Economic Consultations will be convened in person at officials’ level approximately every two years. This mechanism will institutionalise and strengthen our already robust dialogue, and support pragmatic, growth-oriented cooperation delivering tangible benefits for both countries.
