New Zealand's 2025-2035 National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security
Women, Peace and Security
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security was adopted in 2000. In later years, this has been followed by nine complementary UNSC resolutions. Together these resolutions set out four ‘pillars’ of priority issues: prevention of violent conflict; meaningful participation of women at all levels of peace and security governance; the protection of rights for women and girls; and ensuring women’s engagement and addressing their needs in peacebuilding, relief and recovery.
New Zealand’s National Action Plan (NAP) on Women, Peace and Security 2025-2035 [PDF, 4.2 MB] was developed with input from a range of government agencies, women and civil society representatives. The NAP 2025 builds on New Zealand’s first National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security [PDF, 5.1 MB], which ran from 2015-2019. It continues to be centred around the four ‘pillars’ of women, peace and security: prevention, participation, protection, and relief and recovery.
The development of New Zealand’s NAP 2025 also took into account the results of the 2021 inter-agency Implementation Report, which examined the progress made in New Zealand’s first NAP including reflections from civil society(external link) on the National Action Plan’s implementation.
