Public submissions
Two public submissions processes have been held, firstly in September-October 2017, and again in March-April 2018.
- September-October 2017: before negotiations began we called for public submissions on what New Zealand should prioritise in a Pacific Alliance free trade agreement. This call was publicised on the ministry's social media channels and sent to exporting businesses, peak bodies and industry representatives, Māori, and civil society organisations. Twenty-two submissions were received.
- March-April 2018: To reflect the priority the Government attaches to progressive and inclusive trade, we called for submissions on the issues identified by the Government and how New Zealand should look to reflect them in a Pacific Alliance free trade agreement. Twelve submissions were received.
Public meetings and seminars
The negotiating team has held specific Pacific Alliance outreach sessions, as well as taken part in broader engagement on New Zealand’s free trade agreement negotiating agenda. These events have been published on this website and promoted across the ministry's social media channels, and stakeholders have been invited via email.
Specific Pacific Alliance seminars were held in partnership with the Latin America New Zealand Business Council, Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence, and Export New Zealand in Hamilton on 25 June 2018 and in Auckland on 26 June 2018. In conjunction with these partners, a further public meeting on New Zealand’s trade negotiations was held in Christchurch on 2 July 2018.
Between December 2017 and May 2018, public meetings on New Zealand’s free trade agreement negotiating agenda were also held in Dunedin, Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, New Plymouth, Nelson, Napier, Whangarei, Palmerston North, Invercargill, Timaru, Rotorua, and Gisborne.
