Our relationship with Argentina
New Zealand enjoys a friendly, cooperative relationship with Argentina. We have many shared interests, including freeing up global agricultural trade, protecting Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, as well as working together on issues such as climate change, whale conservation, international human rights, peace-keeping and non-proliferation of weapons. We also share a passion for rugby, and the sport has provided a number of opportunities to strengthen connections between us through coaching and player exchanges.
A two-way working holiday scheme gives young citizens the opportunity to visit and work in Argentina and New Zealand. Demand is strong for the 1,000 visas available to young Argentines.
In December 2015, Air New Zealand began flying direct from Auckland to Buenos Aires. Since then, visitor arrivals from Argentina to New Zealand have increased from 5,392 in 2015 to 15,344 in 2016.

Both New Zealand and Argentina rely on their agricultural sectors for export income (particularly dairy, beef and cropping), which is why two-way trade in goods is modest, though growing. That said, New Zealand businesses have made significant investments in Argentina, particularly the dairy, fisheries, wine and tourism sectors and there are opportunities to cooperate further in these areas.
