Biography
Carl Worker took up the role of Ambassador to Argentina in January 2020. He is also Ambassador to Uruguay and Paraguay.
A Spanish speaker, he served previously as Ambassador to Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay from 2001-06, and as Director of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Americas Division from 2006-08.
Also a Mandarin speaker, Carl Worker’s other appointments have included Ambassador to China and Mongolia from 2009-15, Acting Head of Mission in Washington DC during Jun-Dec 2015, Ambassador for Counter Terrorism from 2016-17, and Consul-General in Hong Kong during 1994-98 and 2017-19.
Carl Worker attended an Argentine primary school for five years in the 1960s when his father, a New Zealand agricultural scientist, worked at INTA Balcarce. He studied at Auckland and Oxford Universities. He is married to a New Zealander of Argentine origin, Connie Aldao-Worker, and has four children.
