New Zealand's High Commissioner to Niue
Kirk Yates took up the role of High Commissioner to Niue in May 2018.
During his MFAT career, Kirk has managed seven different bilateral and regional aid programmes in the Pacific, South East Asia and Africa, including being posted to Suva (2005-2009) and Jakarta (2009-2013). Before joining MFAT, Kirk owned and operated a horticultural consulting company and farm management contracting firm in Canterbury.
Since 2013 Kirk has worked in the Pacific Melanesia and Micronesia Division in Wellington as Country Manager - Vanuatu, responsible for overall policy and aid relationships between New Zealand and Vanuatu, in support of the Port Vila High Commission team. More recently he was seconded to the Sustainable Economic Development Division to manage Africa regional agriculture projects.
Kirk has professional interests in the productive sectors, community and social development, and holds a Bachelor of Horticultural Science (Lincoln University) and a Masters of Philosophy in Development (Massey University).
Kirk is married to Jane and has two adult sons in New Zealand.
