A person intending to get married in New Zealand must fill out a Notice of Intended Marriage, before a New Zealand Registrar of Marriages, and complete a statutory declaration that the personal details provided are true and there is no lawful impediment to the marriage. This can be done at a Births, Deaths and Marriages Office (external link) and a fee is paid at this time.

Marriage usually takes place no sooner than three days after completing the Notice of Intended Marriage. There are three types of marriage ceremony that may be chosen:

A Registry Office marriage

This is a brief and simple civil ceremony held in a Registry Office and performed by a Registrar of Marriages. You should contact a local Registrar of Marriages to arrange this type of ceremony. A fee is payable.

A religious marriage, normally held in a church.

The individual church and celebrant (whom you should contact) will determine whether it is possible for the ceremony to take place somewhere other than a church, and whether you may have a say in the form and content of the ceremony.

A non-religious marriage by a marriage celebrant

It is up to you and your celebrant to arrange the type of ceremony you will have and where it will take place.

Documents Required

Normally the only required document for marriage in New Zealand is the completed statutory declaration.

If you have been married before, you should also bring a copy of documents showing how the previous marriage ended. If you have been divorced before, ensure that the divorce certificate shows ‘decree absolute’.

You may be required to produce an international birth certificate.

If you are under the age of twenty, written parental consent is also required.

Registrars of Marriage

The address for the Registrars of Marriage in the town in which you wish to be married can be found in the local telephone directory. It is usually listed under "Justice Department" or "Births, Deaths and Marriages". In smaller towns the Registrar is located in the Court House. A full list of Registry Offices, as well as further detailed information on marrying in New Zealand, can be found on the website of the Births, Deaths and Marriages Office (external link) of the Department of Internal Affairs.
