Ministry Statements & Speeches:
Thank you, Mr President.
New Zealand recognises the importance of peace and stability, human rights, and regional and multilateral engagement to Cambodia's long-term prosperity.
As part of our ongoing development partnership we remain firmly committed to supporting Cambodia's goal of being mine-free by 2030. Our cooperation seeks to reduce the significant humanitarian impact of anti-personnel mines and reinforces New Zealand's support for the norms against these indiscriminate weapons.
New Zealand welcomes Cambodia's cooperation with United Nations human rights mechanisms. We acknowledge its efforts to strengthen legal and institutional frameworks that support human rights, rule of law, judicial independence, and to address transnational, serious and organised crime.
New Zealand remains concerned, however, about restrictions on civic and political space, including limitations on freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly, independent media and political participation. An open, inclusive society where diverse voices are heard is essential for democratic governance, public trust and social and economic progress.
We encourage Cambodia to engage constructively with civil society, uphold its international human rights obligations and ensure that all people can exercise their rights without fear of intimidation or reprisals.
Mr President, what measures could support Cambodia to strengthen civic space, political participation and democratic governance?
