Human Rights Council 47th Session of the Universal Periodic Review – Nicaragua

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Deputy Permanent Representative Mr Nathan Glassey.

Mr President,

We welcome the delegation from Nicaragua.

New Zealand acknowledges Nicaragua’s participation in the UPR and urges that it cooperate with other international and regional human rights mechanisms.

New Zealand recommends that Nicaragua:

1.    Ensure that all security forces act in accordance with the principles of legitimate, proportionate and necessary use of force in the context of protests, and do not infringe on freedom of expression, consistent with Article 54 of the Nicaraguan Constitution.

2.    Consistent with Article 46 of the Nicaraguan Constitution, repeal any legislative or administrative measures to close down, raid or silence the legitimate activities of civil society organizations and to strip citizens of statehood.

3.    Repeal the total prohibition of abortion and the criminalisation and detention of women for so-called abortion-related offences under Article 143 of the Criminal Code.

We thank the delegation for its participation today.

Thank you, Mr President.
