Human Rights Council 51st Session of the Universal Periodic Review – Australia

Mr President,

We warmly welcome the Australian delegation.

We welcome Australia’s introduction of new strategies to end gender-based violence, support for the rights of persons with disabilities, and improvements for the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQ+ people.

New Zealand recommends that Australia:

1.  Introduce a national human rights framework;
2.  Address inequalities affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, especially in health, education and justice;
3. Eliminate high rates of gender-based violence against women and girls, online and offline, including implementing further measures under its 2022-2032 National Plan; and 
4. Take further action to empower persons with disabilities to fully participate in political and public life without discrimination and ensure their involvement in the development of policies affecting them.
