63rd session of the Human Rights Council Interactive Dialogue on the report of the Independent International Fact Finding Mission on the Islamic Republic of Iran

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Delivered by Permanent Representative HE Deborah Geels.

Thank you, Mr President,

New Zealand thanks the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for its report and continued work in documenting serious human rights violations and abuses in Iran.

We remain concerned by reports that Iranian security and law enforcement authorities have used excessive force against protesters and engaged other actions that restrict freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association.

We note reports of internet shutdowns and restrictions on access to information during the protests, which curtailed fundamental rights and freedoms and undermined transparency and accountability.

New Zealand is concerned by ongoing reports of executions, including those imposed following proceedings that fall short of international fair trial standards. We reiterate our opposition to the death penalty in all circumstances and call on Iran to immediately halt executions. No individual should lose their life at the hands of the state for peacefully exercising their fundamental human rights.

We remain concerned by ongoing discrimination against religious and ethnic minorities, including members of the Baha'i community.

We urge Iran to cooperate fully with the Fact-Finding Mission, and to take meaningful steps to implement its recommendations to protect and promote the human rights of all persons in Iran.

Thank you.
