PacificTA is the local government initiative that teams New Zealand-based technical experts with their counterparts in Pacific Island countries. PacificTA – or Local Government Technical Assistance Facility for Pacific Island Countries – has been running since 2012 and is funded through the New Zealand International Development Cooperation (IDC) Programme.
PacificTA helps Pacific Island managers to provide public services such as environmental management (e.g. water and air quality) infrastructure and asset management, town planning, transport planning, and public health and safety programmes such as dog control and building control. We also engage with support in the foundation of organisations, including human resources, governance and regulation, information, and communications technology (ICT), financial management and leadership.
Pacific Island countries with a bilateral programme with New Zealand are eligible. This includes the Cook Islands, Tonga, Niue, Samoa, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, Tokelau and Kiribati.
This initiative mainly involves provision of short-term technical expertise to the Pacific. Longer term assistance is considered on a case-by-case basis.
