Approvals in principle

If you are not ready to apply for a permit but would like to seek an 'approval in principle' you should email a request to the export controls team.

A letter of approval in principle does not constitute any agreement that subsequent export approval for these products will be automatically forthcoming. It is designed to give confidence that export approval is likely to be considered favourably once a formal application is made. However, because of the time element between the approval in principle and the issuing of the actual export permit, any change in circumstances would need to be considered at the time the formal application is assessed.

Some approvals in principle will require us to conduct a formal assessment as we would for an application. In order to do this the following information should be supplied with the in-principle request:

  • Description of the goods
  • Quantity if known
  • Value if known
  • End-user
  • End-use
  • Any  relevant timeframes
