Developing the final version – next steps
Public consultation on the draft research directions and priorities document closed on 16 August 2021.
Thank you for the feedback received, which will inform the draft to be provided to Cabinet for consideration. The publication of the final document will take place in late 2021.
This draft document sets the high-level directions and priorities for Aotearoa New Zealand’s Antarctic and Southern Ocean programme of research.
It identifies the science priorities for government investment in research, logistics and infrastructure over the next ten years.
It also identifies goals and government objectives for researchers and communicators – through the four research priority areas and the guiding principles.
Increasing our understanding of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean environment and how it is changing can help us to anticipate future impacts on Aotearoa New Zealand and how to deal with them.
It will also support our country’s commitment to preserve and protect this unique area, the ecosystems there and the biodiversity it supports, including the migratory species that are so important to our economy and culture.
