Across the Pacific, communities are grappling with the effects of climate change. Rising sea levels eat away at shorelines, natural habitats are threatened, food and clean water is harder to access, and extreme weather damages infrastructure and leaves villages isolated.
Climate Finance provided by New Zealand is supporting a number of partnerships and programmes that work with our Pacific neighbours to find solutions - often nature-based – to the crisis. Our series of videos showcase initiatives, from mangrove rehabilitation to solar power generation, that are building resilience and hope for the future.

Founded in 2016, the IUCN’s Kiwa Initiative recognises that natural ecosystems and biodiversity are critical to sustainable action on climate change. Indigenous, nature-based solutions
A grassroots-led approach to climate challenges is enabling rural communities in Fiji to collectively plan for a climate resilient future. The Climate Resilient Islands (CRI) programme – funded by New Zealand and implemented by environmental education organisation Live & Learn – provides grant-funding for activities that improve food security, reduce disaster risk and restore ecosystems. Protective planting to fight climate change

This sustainable financing mechanism enables Tonga to both access large-scale international climate finance, and deliver adaption initiatives at the community level. Guardians of the Pacific’s plant biodiversity
At the Centre for Pacific Crops and Trees (CePaCT) in Suva, a female-led team of scientists are safeguarding the region’s plant genetic resources. In 2022 New Zealand allocated $10 million to the Centre – which conserves over 2400 crop and tree varieties – to scale up its vital work.
